The GROW Model of coaching was first developed by Sir John Whitmore. It works from the idea that one must have a goal, and the GROW Model allows one to achieve those goals more effectively and efficiently. This is an excellent model that can be used in the field of Education.
Teachers may use the GROW Model to help students set a SMART Goal (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound) and eventually guide them towards the attainment of their goal.
The G in the GROW Model starts with the Goal, which is what the outcome the student is chasing. It may be in the form of a short-term goal or a long-term goal. But the problem with goal setting is that sometimes students may set unrealistic or unachievable goals and then simply give up on them. Some students may not be able to clearly articulate their goal. Suppose we take an example of a 10th-grade student named Sarthak who comes to the teacher and says, “I want to be the top scorer in English in my class”. Now, here the teacher can help him to set a specific goal by asking specific questions:
How much do you want to score in English in your Board Exam?
What is the percentage in English that you are working on?
These questions will elicit a specific reply:
I want to score 95% in English in my Board Exam
Now, the Goal has been identified. So, we move to “R” of the GROW Model, which is Reality Check or the Current Reality. This is where we are identifying where Sarthak is right now, so that we may understand how far the goal is from where he is currently. The teacher may now pose a question to know Sarthak’s Current Reality:
How much did you score in English in your school’s Pre-Board Exams?
Sarthak’s Reply may be:
80%
Thus, now we know that he is only 15% away from his goal, and the goal seems achievable
The next step in the GROW Model is to identify “O,” that is, Options or opportunities. “O” may also be the obstacles that are preventing him from achieving his goals. Sarthak now needs to list down the obstacles that he needs to overcome to get to his goal. The OBSTACLES may be:
Not able to devote enough time to English
Problem with tenses
Options:
Set a timetable
Practice exercises on tenses
Join specialized Grammar Classes
The last step of the GROW Model is the Way forward. Once Sarthak has zeroed down on his obstacles/options/opportunities, he can take action and move towards the attainment of his goal of scoring 95% in his Board Exam
It is imperative for one to identify the goals, understand where he is currently with respect to the goal, and identify the shortcomings so that they can be improved upon, which could eventually lead him to goal attainment
